Select places

Last updated: 14 Sep 2026

When creating an alert, select the place or places you want to monitor. You will receive alerts when new weed records in those places match your other alert settings.

Place

You can select one of these three options:

  • All of New Zealand
  • North Island
  • South Island

Or you can search for a place name. You can filter the search with the buttons below the search bar:

Search box with buttons to filter by Region, District, Suburb etc.

SWAT currently supports the following types of place:

  • 'Region' (areas administered by regional councils and unitary authorities)
  • 'District' (areas administered by territorial authorities i.e. district and city councils, and by local boards)
  • 'Suburb' (including rural areas classified as localities)
  • 'Island' (populated and larger islands)
  • 'Iwi Area of Interest' (as published by Te Puni Kōkiri, see here for details)
  • 'Public Conservation Land' (places protected for natural and historic resources and managed by DOC)
  • 'DOC Operations District' (the administrative areas DOC uses to structure its operational work)

Other place types will be added later.

You can select multiple places for a single alert, including different types of place if you wish.

The centre of each place is shown on the map.

Buffer zone

You can add a buffer zone around your selected place. You will then be alerted to nearby weed records, which gives you early warning before new weeds spread into the area. To do this, adjust the slider below the map to set the buffer distance.

You can also set a location uncertainty threshold in the advanced settings.

After you select your places, you can fine‑tune your advanced settings and then review your alert.
