Registering and using an account

Creating a SWAT account

You need a SWAT account to set up and receive SWAT alerts.

To register, you need:

  • a valid email address
  • a password of at least 16 characters
  • to set up Two Factor Authentication (TFA)

Two Factor Authentication means you enter a second code as well as your username and password.

If your email address ends with @doc.govt.nz, you don't need to register. Go to Log in with a DOC email address.

Setting up two factor authentication

You can get your code from an authenticator app or by email. Set up at least one of these options, or your account will be locked. You can set up both if you like.

Authenticator app

After you log in for the first time, go to 'My account' and select the 'TFA' tab. Select 'Set up application' and follow the steps.

You will be prompted to scan a QR code. Your app then generates a new 6-digit code every 60 seconds. Enter the current code to finish setting up.

If you don't set up TFA set up, a warning message will prompt to do it. Failure to do so will lock your account.

Common authenticator apps include:

Email code

To get your codes by email, check the 'Enable Email TFA for my account' box when you create your account.

You can also turn this on later from the 'Edit' tab under 'My account'.

Logging in to SWAT

Choose the login option that matches the TFA method you set up:

  • 'Log in with an authenticator app'
  • 'Log in with an email code'

If your email address ends with @doc.govt.nz, use 'Log in with DOC email address' instead.

Log in with an authenticator app

Enter your username and password. You'll be asked for a 6-digit code.

  • Open your authenticator app.
  • Find the entry named 'Drupal: smart-weed-alert-tool-[your username]'.
  • Enter the code it shows to log in.

Log in with an email code

Enter your username and password. We will email you a 6-digit code. Enter the code to log in.

Log in with a DOC email address

This option is only for Department of Conservation (DOC) staff. It is required for accounts with a @doc.govt.nz email address. When you select this button, you will be taken to the Microsoft login that DOC uses. Once you enter your account details, you will be redirected to your SWAT account.
